Preparing for Cataclysm

ss212

I had initially planned to post a follow up to the previous discussion regarding the raid changes coming in Cataclysm. Indeed, I still intend to follow up on that post and address some of the issues that many brought up in the comments. However, that post isn’t for today. Things have been a bit hectic for me recently (which would explain the sparse updates the last few days that I’m sure many of you noticed), so instead I’d like to address a much lighter topic today. In the most recent episode of The Instance (which I listen to regularly and greatly enjoy despite some of the factual mistakes they tend to make on occasion), Scott and Randy discussed things they intend to accomplish before the release of Cataclysm.

Specifically, in this episode, they discussed finishing their Classic Dungeon achievements. As they pointed out, many veteran players (myself included) lack many of the old dungeon achievements simply because the achievement system was introduced long after they’d completed the instances and there was no reason to return to them, save simply for the sake of getting the achievement. They also mentioned that there’s a good chance that some of these old achievements may very well go by the wayside (or perhaps revert to Feats of Strength) once Cataclysm is released, making it a “now or never” scenario.

After listening to the episode (in fact, while I was still listening to the rest of it), I logged in and immediately set off to finish up some long-neglected achievements.

In the episode, they mentioned a good achievement tracking tool: WoW Over Achiever (not to be confused with the Over Achiever add-on). Just before logging in, I headed over there to take a quick peek at where I stood, and realized I could kill a few birds with one stone.

I still need the Keymaster achievement (and I have no idea how I missed the couple of Classic keys that I was missing for it), which I could easily complete while doing the Classic dungeon achievements. Once I had a fair idea of what I needed to do, I set off immediately for Dire Maul as my first port of call. (As an aside, I’ve always loved Dire Maul. But then, I’m rather partial to all the Night Elven stuff in-game.)

Which brings me around to what I’d like to discuss today: what are your big plans for the time between now and the release of Cataclysm?

For me, I actually have plenty I’d still like to do. As I mentioned, I’d like to finish off the Classic Dungeon achievements and some other odds and ends. Also, I have plans to finish leveling my Druid and Rogue who have languished in their 70s for almost this entire expansion while I focused on other things. (Doing so would bring me up to five 80s.) If I manage to finish off both of them before Cataclysm comes, I also intend to finish leveling my Mage as well (who’s now in the 50s). I’d also like to pick up some more heirloom items for my Warrior who, sadly, has been cooling her heels in the 30s since Classic (in fact, my Warrior was the first character I ever created). My ultimate goal–not before the release of Cataclysm, but just in general–is to eventually have one of every class at the level cap.

So, share with me and other members of our little corner of the web, dear readers. What is it you have planned for the rest of Wrath? How are you preparing for the Cataclysm?

GREAT Topic! I look forward to reading any and all comments.

Most night sI just play after 11pm to wind down. My routine is kinda dreary nowadays. Just a couple dailies while I wait for random dungeon daily and random BG daily. I also often do a couple of the Death’s Rise dailies (the corpse rise and no fly zone because by foregoing use of the griffin they offer,I can do the two together in just a few minutes).

I didn’t do any of the classic dungeons while leveling….I didn’t do ANY dungeons at that time.
Did a bunch of BC heroics finally for the demented florist badge crossbow…and later at 80 went back solo all the 5 man BC instances at a nonheroic setting (heroic solos doable for an 80 there but INCREDIBLY tedious….for me anyway). Did that to top up a few reps and just for fun.

I have only soloed one wing of dire maul…I like it too. Wandered in to Gnomergan and just did not know where to go. “Maps only” just don’t help much…obviously I need to do more homework about quests to gather etc before i try another classic solo.

Have 34 exalted reps….would like to get one more. I enjoy BGs and am revered with the defilers, but waiting times for specific BGs are CRAZY HIGH on my server….often over 40 minutes now at my playing times. I am very close to exalted with The Violet Eye, so my try and hook up with a Kara pug someday.

Anyway, again I really look forward to reading about the plans and approaches. of others The game is still fun to me.

Ps while am babbling about my one played toon…

Like everyone I have quite a few titles. Don’t use any of em because my name is already long enough and so I am a too easily noticed prime target in BGs as it is…lol

Because i can’t commit to fixed arena or raid times, I’ll never get any of the more esoteric titles from those venues.

The one I would display – target or no target – would be Of The Horde (100 thousand hks) Only have slightly over 76k now so though nowadays they pass out HKs like beer nuts, I probably won’t ever get there…..

You say you want 1 more rep at the 34 you have. Maybe reconsider and get 6, to make your total up to 40 exalted reputations, which will give you:

      the Exalted

something I am working on as well.

I have finnally begun to achieve “Insane in the Membrane”. I planned to do this for a longer time now, but I never actually started.
Till now it is easier and quicker than expected. But I still have a long way to go.
on my main-character I already finished all “may go away” achievements. And I don’t plan to do them on all my twinks.

Could you give some advice on where / how to start? I read a couple of guides etc. about this, but i am very very affraid of this one. I am because I have done the loremaster title and grinded some steamwheedle rep before “the Insane” came. Currently having all steamwheedle factions at revered (2000 or so). Do you know if there is any way gaining pirate rep without losing this?

unfortunately no. you have to annihilate your Goblincity rep to get Bloodsail to honored. I was in the exact same situation like you. up to 5k into revered. that was a sour apple I had to swallow.

but at least getting Bloodsail up to honored is the easiest rep of the insane reps. on my realm there is nealy alway someone trying to get Bloodsail Admiral. just tag along and you will be done in a day or two. doing this solo as a hunter is a little bit bothersome because the bruisers root you with a net. so you will spend a lot of time in melee.

second easiest is ravenholdt (if you have a rogue twink that is at least 63/64). spec into camouflage and fleet footed. you stealthed speed with these two talents is around 98% of the normal running speed. I need around 30-45 mins in LBRS to get 60 junkboxes. and dont forget to kill syndicate in durnholde/hillsbrad up to 11999/12000 (can be done in around 4-5 hours).

Darkmoon is just a matter of gold (as is shen’dralar). it greatly helps if you have an inscriber/herbalist character. I prefere to make the lvl60 cards, they need the least mats. I farm the herbs in winterspring, there is virtually nobody at any time. icecap and mountain silversage also have a 50% chance for the rare pigment. depending on your realm the lvl 70 cards can be a good alternative. netherstorm is a good place to farm the herbs. or shadowmoon valley, you can jump to terokar quickly to kill the elite tree elementals in skettis for primal life.

shen’dralar and the goblin citys can be done simultaneously. grinding DireMaul for a very long time.
if you are lucky lots of librams and pristine black diamonds drop. but most likely you will have to buy lots of both from the AH.

Loremaster, Guardian of Cenarius and if I am lucky Mountain of Mounts. Along the way I may go for the 25 Tabards and the other rep achieves. I also need just one more key for the Keymaster so when I am working on my outlands quests I will snag my last key.

For the Cenarion Circle rep, Awesome (in case that’s the half you need)

In my experience, while many of the Silithus quests grant rep and it is a grind for sure, the quickest way is completing Bor Wildman’es Secret Communications quest and then wiping out one Twilight camp after another to get Encrypted Twilight Text drops (or looking for em on AH if you have a slew of gold). 500 rep per stack of 10 when I did it. Be sure to keep an eye out for the Twilight Prophet wandering about. That mob always drops multiples of the text. Have fun – though that ain’t much fun :)

Well. let me just stick to my main caracter, dwarf hunter. ‘Cause thats the one i consider as most important toon. 2 of my other 80s are just for additional use for the guild (bear-tank and priest healer). last 80 is my rogue, which i made to pvp, but lately i’ve been gearing pve with her as well.

Lets get back to the main hunter though. I am one of those people trying to get (nearly) all achievements possible. One of my main goals is getting the “over 9000″ achievement, which i still need somewhat of 1500 points for, but havent tracked it much lately tbh. Loads of the achievements aquired for doing all, involves things i would like to do (40 reps, Salty title etc.). Another thing I would really like is to see/defeat Arthas. My guild got up to killing 8 bosses in ICC, (i done 6) but we’re lacking some interest the last two weeks.

So basicly 2 goals really. Kill Arthas and get as many achievements as possible :-)

First and foremost is my priority to get the Lich King down…

I thought about doing the classic raids, and I have tried some (soloing ZG is quite fun actually), but I just didn’t find it that giving. Doing them with a friend or guildmate might be an option, but other than that, it doesn’t attract me that much. I see it as a chapter of the story I just missed, and I can live with that.

Speaking of killing time before cataclysm…

A couple nights ago a bout of insomnia and boredom let me to a 3AM shadow labs solo.

For the first time I can recall in the game, I got an epic (albeit pretty low level) drop from a trash mob – the plans for plate Bracers of the Green Fortress.

Checked online for auction house averages and was very surprised to see the average sale price around 760. Put the plans up for 525 and they sold pretty quickly.

Boring story but a wasted gaming night bore some fruit anyway….
