Having gotten a few other posts I’ve been meaning to do out of the way, we can now return to our leveling gear series! I can sense your excitement permeating every pore of your body.
Now that you’ve made the jump into the 40s, it’s time to start phasing out those Leather pieces and replacing them with Mail items. Just remember: don’t sacrifice stats just to go up an armor class. If you’re wearing a Leather item that has better stats on it, don’t feel obligated to upgrade to Mail just because it’s Mail. Better Mail pieces will come along soon enough, so don’t be afraid to hold on to those last Leather pieces if you need to.
Armor
Murkwater Gauntlets — These bind-on-equip gloves are a zone drop in Sunken Temple. (Which means you can pick them up from the Auction House if you don’t happen to see them drop.) For now, if you’ve got the Careful Aim talent, the Intellect on these gloves will provide an added boost to your Attack Power in addition to the Attack Power already found on the gloves.
However, one thing to keep in mind here is that Intellect will be a useless stat for us once Cataclysm is released since we’ll no longer be using mana. If you plan to finish leveling before Cataclysm, feel free to grab these. If you’re not sure you’ll be leveled by then (maybe your Hunter is a very casual alt for you), you may want to look for something that will have more long-term usefulness.
Mithril Coif — This helm is crafted by Blacksmiths, so you can either provide the mats and have someone craft it for you or you can purchase it right off the Auction House. One thing I would note here is that even now Mithril tends to be fairly expensive to purchase off the Auction House, so if you can, you may want to farm the mats for this yourself.
Mithril Scale Shoulders — Again, these are crafted by Blacksmiths and you can either have them crafted for you or you can purchase them directly from the Auction House.
Blackmetal Cape — This bind-on-equip cape is a zone drop in Zul’Farrak.
Tough Scorpid Boots — These boots are crafted by Leatherworkers, and the mats are fairly common among Skinners that have spent any time leveling in Tanaris.
Tough Scorpid Leggings — Again, these are crafted by Leatherworkers, and the mats are extremely similar to those of the boots.
Infernal Trickster Leggings — These drop from Lord Vyletongue in Maraudon. The extra 1% Hit on these is especially nice, since Hit can be difficult to come by at lower levels.
Poobah’s Nose Ring — This is a quest reward from Message in a Bottle. While this ring isn’t particularly impressive, and could conceivably be called a tanking ring because of the added armor on it, rings can be difficult to come by while leveling, so you may want to keep this one in mind.
Tough Scorpid Helm — You guessed it! Another Leatherworking piece.
I’m actually very supportive of people using crafted items while leveling. For one, they’re extremely easy to come by, and while they may not be the absolute best gear available, they’re not bad either. Second, it supports those trying to level a profession–whether that’s you, or someone you’re purchasing these items from on the Auction House. Leveling a profession can be difficult in the low/mid levels, so it’s nice to make use of the items crafters are forced to make to get their skills up.
Bloomsprout Headpiece — This drops from Meshlok the Harvester in Maraudon.
Grovekeeper’s Drape — This drops from Celebras the Cursed in Maraudon.
Dragonscale Breastplate — Another Leatherworking piece. This one, however, may be a bit difficult to obtain unless you’re a Skinner that can get the mats yourself. The reason for that is this item requires Worn Dragonscales to craft, and very few people bother farming them anymore. If you do manage to find one on the Auction House, the scarcity of dragonscales will also likely push the price up on this item, so if you can farm the mats yourself, I suggest you do so.
Heavy Scorpid Bracers — Yep, another Leatherworking item.
In these mid levels, Leatherworking is an extremely helpful profession to have (as you can see). The problem is, it’s difficult to justify continuing to level the profession because items at later levels are decidedly lack-luster.
Albino Crocscale Boots — These drop from Rotgrip in Maraudon. Despite the fact that these boots are Leather, they may still be an upgrade for you depending on what you’re already wearing, so don’t count them out immediately.
Fleetfoot Greaves — These drop from Houndmaster Grebmar in Blackrock Depths.
Rockgrip Gauntlets — These drop from Landslide in Maraudon. While it would be nice if these had Agility instead of Intellect, they’re still not bad, especially if you’ve got the Careful Aim talent.
Searingscale Leggings — These drop from Pyromancer Loregrain in Blackrock Depths. One thing I would note here is that these are arguably Shaman pants (primarily because of the mp5 on them), but the other stats are sufficiently attractive for you to want to keep them in mind.
Bloodshot Greaves — These drop from the Shade of Hakkar in Sunken Temple.
Bracers of the Stone Princess — These drop from Princess Theradras in Maraudon.
Blackstone Ring — This ring drops from Princess Theradras in Maraudon as well.
Rubicund Armguards — These drop from Eviscerator in Blackrock Depths.
Heavy Scorpid Gauntlets — Another Leatherworking item.
Weapons
Megashot Rifle — This drops from Tinkerer Gizlock in Maraudon.
Verdant Keeper’s Aim — This is a quest reward from Corruption of Earth and Seed (Horde/Alliance).
Thorium Rifle — Crafted by Engineers.
Gryphonwing Long Bow — This bind-on-equip bow is a world drop that you can pick up from the Auction House.
Stinging Bow — This bind-on-equip bow is a zone drop in Sunken Temple.
Houndmaster’s Bow/Houndmaster’s Rifle — Drops from Houndmaster Grebmar in Blackrock Depths.
Precisely Calibrated Boomstick — This bind-on-equip gun is a world drop from several different zones. The stats are very good for that level (as you might expect from an epic), but you may not want to part with the gold to purchase it off the Auction House.
Dazzling Mithril Rapier — Crafted by Blacksmiths.
Zorbin’s Mega-Slicer — Quest reward from Zapped Giants.
Ebon Shiv — Crafted by Blacksmiths.
Inventor’s Focal Sword — Drops from Tinkerer Gizlock in Maraudon.
Dawn’s Edge — Crafted by Blacksmiths.
Intrepid Shortsword — Quest reward from Mission Accomplished! (Horde/Alliance)
As you can see, you’re starting to come across more and more options for gear as you level, so getting nice items will get a lot easier for you. It may, of course, get a bit pricey as well, but for many gold isn’t an issue, so that shouldn’t slow you down. And even if you are short on gold, there are plenty of quest and dungeon rewards out there too.
Happy Hunting!
