The Siege of Ulduar: XT-002 Deconstructor Guide

We’re going to do something a little different today. Instead of looking at class mechanics or specs, we’re going to look at the latest raid available to you guys. Ulduar, as you all probably know, is similar to Naxx in the way that it is divided into four sections. The initial section is called The Siege of Ulduar and is all about breaking into Ulduar where you’ll later face some familiar NPCs (if you’ve done some of the larger quest chains at least). Let’s take a deeper look into how exactly you break into Ulduar. Today, we’ll be focusing on XT-002 Deconstructor.

XT-002 Deconstructor

xt

Abilities

  • Tympanic Tantrum – Channeled spell that hits everyone for 10% of their maximum HP every second for 12 seconds.
  • Searing Light – Inflicts around 3,000-4,000 damage a second to players within 10 yards for 9 seconds
  • Gravity Bomb – Deals 12,000-15,000 damage to the target and pulls players within 12 yards to the original target, dealing 11,000-15,000 damage to them as well.

The Trash

For XT, there’s actually two sets of trash right at the front of his room. This is where hunters come through for the raid. That’s right, it’s time to /flex and equip your kiting gear. Get that Distracting Shot ready and when instructed to, shoot the little mechanical gnomes. They use some sort of Defensive Shield at times, but don’t stop moving. I recommend pulling the little gnomes out of the room into the hallway where you can Frost Trap them with ease. Keep the gnome occupied until the raid can come out and kill them and then repeat the same thing for the second trash group. You should have two hunters in the group for these pulls because there are two gnomes in each trash group.

XT Phase

XT is a fun boss because it requires some coordination. This is the fight that you as a hunter will probably have the most fun doing because it requires you to actually do something other than shoot the boss in the face repeatedly. XT is easiest when tanked between two piles on either the left or right side because he won’t spawn adds from the piles he’s next to. Other than that, your raid should be split in two, one group left, one group right, or you could do one large group right behind him. XT will place Light Bombs and Gravity Bombs on people at random and both require those who have them to move out of the group they are with. Searing Light will explode and cause damage to everyone around them while Gravity Bombs will explode, deal damage, and drag people towards the person who had it. It’s best to get 15 yards away from the group if you have a bomb on you.

The first part of this fight is easy for hunters. You DPS the boss until he hits 75% at which point his heart will drop.

Heart Phase

When the heart drops, all you have to do is DPS it. Don’t kill it unless you want to activate hard mode. The more you burn the heart, the more damage XT takes as well, so the ultimate goal is to burn it down enough to make him get to the next heart phase immediately after. If your raid can’t get the heart that far down (I believe it’s 1%), then getting it to about 40-50% will work just as well and take off about 15-20% of XT’s health. Partway through the heart “phase,” adds will spawn from the scrap piles. You’ll see mini scrap bots, bomb bots and larger versions of the scrap bots called Pummellers. Hunters need to use Volley on the groups of smaller scrap bots because if they get to XT, he will regen about 2% health for each one that gets to him. Bomb bots can be allowed to pass and hit XT because they will damage him but the melee needs to get out before they explode. The larger Pummellers should be picked up by a second tank and then tanked for the remainder of the fight.

The fight repeats from there every 25%, so just be sure to Volley. You may also want to stop using Black Arrow when the heart drops so that you can use a Frost Trap to slow down the scrap bots if you’re having trouble DPSing them down fast enough.

The Loot

10 Man:

25 Man:

  • Twisted Visage – /drool One of the weapons that EVERY hunter wants. There’s two others that are very similar later on in Ulduar, but they don’t have hit rating. This is really good if you aren’t hit capped or want to be above the hit cap in case you have to sacrifice hit later.
  • Brass-lined Boots – These boots are amazing upgrades if you’re still using the old badge boots. Keep them in mind just in case they drop.

The Siege

After you down XT-002 Deconstructor, a portal opens up behind him. You’ve now officially broken into Ulduar. We’ll start taking a look at The Antechamber of Ulduar in upcoming articles. If you’ve got special tips that your group uses to defeat these bosses, be sure to leave them in the comments!

I’m thrilled that I finally found a site starting to post hunter strategy guides for Ulduar bosses :) It would be magical awesomesauce if you could (eventually) combine all these Ulduar hunter guides into one page/link. Sort of like Lassira’s Naxx guide? I enjoy linking great info to other hunters in my guild, but a different post for every boss will be too much to quickly and easily link.

Anyhow, keep up the great work! And thanks again!

Note to the trash tactics, my guilds personal experience is that we have always tanked the gnomes among the rest trash, when they pop the shield its simple business to just move the mobs out of it and allows for AoEing, and therefore trash meeting its end sooner

@ieatkittens — Links to all our Ulduar boss guides will be added to the “Featured” page once they’ve all gone live, but a wrap-up post is also very doable at the end of the series as well. :)

Nice guide. Thanks for taking the time. A few thoughts:
    - Many hunters are engineers – you can use this skill to pilfer the trash after it’s down.
    - Knowing wear to run when you have light or bomb on you is critical. Staying in range of heals is vital.
    - Hard mode isn’t horrible. In fact, the adds stop spawning, but you will need much more coordination to deal with sparks and void zones. If you have the DPS in your raid – give it a try.
    - We use mages to deal with the groups of adds. Hunters stay on XT unless the adds get close. If help is needed, you turn and fire. This is better than running to the piles and then having to run back to XT – which is wasted DPS time.

    Thanks again!
