The Siege of Ulduar: Ignis the Furnace Master Guide

We’re going to do something a little different today. Instead of looking at class mechanics or specs, we’re going to look at the latest raid available to you guys. Ulduar, as you all probably know, is similar to Naxx in the way that it is divided into four sections. The initial section is called The Siege of Ulduar and is all about breaking into Ulduar where you’ll later face some familiar NPCs (if you’ve done some of the larger quest chains at least). Let’s take a deeper look into how exactly you break into Ulduar. Today, we’ll be focusing on Ignis the Furnace Master.

Abilities

  • Flame Jets – Deals about 6,000 damage and interrupts casting. Also stops casting of any spells in the school of the spell that was interrupted for 8 seconds.
  • Scorch – Deals about 2,500 damage every half second to anyone in front of the caster. Scorches the ground which is used to apply Heat to Iron Constructs.
  • Slag Pot – Deals 5,000 a second for 10 seconds to whoever is in the Slag Pot. If you survive, you gain 100% haste for 10 seconds (and you get an achievement)
  • Strength of the Creator – Fore every Iron Construct alive, Ignis gains 15% increased damage. Stacks up to 99 times.

Ignis is pretty much a healer check. As a hunter, your job is to stand still and DPS. It’s that easy. Now, to start the fight, my raid usually has a hunter Misdirect the boss to the tank which allows the tank to be set up near a pool of water. The tank should be kiting Ignis slightly so that there’s at least one or two Scroches on the ground from Ignis’s Scorch skill. You’ll need at least one other tank to pick up Constructs and heat them up before dipping them in the pools. When the Constructs are in the pools, Hunters and ranged DPS should hit them and destroy them because they give Ignis a damage buff. It takes a 5,000+ damage hit to destroy a construct.

If your tank is taking too much damage, one thing you can do as a hunter is use Scorpid Sting. When Science of War (my guild) first did Ignis, that’s what I was in charge of. It reduces the boss’s chance to hit by 3% and can be kept up with ease.

The only other thing you really have to worry about is getting in the Slag Pot. Ignis will occasionally target a random person in the raid and pick them up, toss them into the Slag Pot, and then proceed to kill them. Your healers just need to keep you up when you’re in the Slag Pot and you’ll be fine.

The Loot

10 Man:

  • Relentless Edge – Awesome looking Polearm for hunters. It has decent stats and is amazing for a 10 man drop.
  • Rifle of the Platinum Guard – Not a bad gun, but there’s no agility. It should probably go to a DPS Warrior first, but it should be safe to roll on.

25 Man:

We’ll be continuing this guide for all the bosses of Ulduar, so keep an eye out for later bosses in future articles. If you’ve got special tips that your group uses to defeat these bosses, be sure to leave them in the comments!

Generally speaking you probably don’t want to have a hunter try and pop the brittle constructs. Hunters get lots of shots and dps, but only a few shots crit for > 5k. Even with the crit buff those few shots might not do it. It’s generally better to have a mage or boomkin (especially if they rooted the construct there) do the job.

I realized that after I wrote the guide. I forgot that it had to be a 5k hit to shatter them. I’ll edit it after my raid tonight.

actually MM hunters are quite capable of shattering the golems, i just did it on 10 man and always managed to shatter them. I used serpent-Chimera on them and when chimera was on cooldown aimed usually did the trick.

I think you can deterrence the flame jets to avoid their damage
especially with a macro that pops deterrence on and then off when you click it again
