The Siege of Ulduar: Razorscale Guide

We’re going to do something a little different today. Instead of looking at class mechanics or specs, we’re going to look at the latest raid available to you guys. Ulduar, as you all probably know, is similar to Naxx in the way that it is divided into four sections. The initial section is called The Siege of Ulduar and is all about breaking into Ulduar where you’ll later face some familiar NPCs (if you’ve done some of the larger quest chains at least). Let’s take a deeper look into how exactly you break into Ulduar. Today, we’ll be focusing on Razorscale.

Razorscale

Abilities

  • Devouring Flame – Inflicts around 6,000 damage a second to anyone in it, as well as anyone within 6 yards of the blast. Lasts 25 seconds
  • Fireball – Inflicts roughly 7,000 damage to the target
  • Flame Buffet – Increases Fire Damage taken by 1,000 for 1 minute. Stacks 99 times. Tanks will need to swap in and out to reduce stacks
  • Wing Buffet – Knocks back anyone around Razorscale
  • Fuse Armor – Reduces armor, attack speed, and movement speed by 20% for 20 seconds. Stacks 5 times at which point the tank will become stunned
  • Flame Breath – Deals 13,000-17,000 damage in a cone shape

Razorscale is an optional boss, just like Ignis the Furnace Master. Both of them increase the enrage timer on XT-002 Deconstructor, so it’s recommended that you down them. Razorscale is an interesting fight as she is in the air for most of the battle and the raid is on the ground dealing with adds that spawn out of drills that pop out of the ground. There are three types of mobs that spawn, Dark Rune Watchers, Dark Rune Guardians and Dark Rune Sentinels.

In Flight

For the first part of this fight, the raid should be split into two groups, each with its own tank, healers and DPS. Both sides will spawn Dark Rune Watchers and Guardians which the tanks have to pick up. Watchers should be killed first because of their Chain Lightning and then the DPS can move on to Guardians. If a Dark Run Sentinel spawns, it will spawn in the center and if you have it, a third tank should pick it up. The Sentinel hits hard so you’ll need to keep heals up too. Ranged DPS should take down the Sentinels ASAP. Another thing that everyone needs to watch out for is Razorscale’s Devouring Flame patches. They’re blue flames and if you’re in them, get out. Other than that, Razorscale will pick a target and shoot a fireball at them, so this phase is fairly simple.

Roughly every thirty seconds to a minute, a harpoon will be available for use and someone in the raid should use it. When four (in 25 man) have been used, Razorscale will hit the ground. As a hunter, this is a fairly straightforward fight. You just burn Razorscale down and she will take off into the skies shortly after. You repeat the add phase until Razorscale hits 50% health and is permanently grounded.

On The Ground

At this point, Hunters should just make sure they aren’t in front of the boss and then burn it down. Pop any cooldowns and don’t pull aggro. If you can do that, you’re good. The tank should be kiting Razorscale in a circle, so at times you may need to move to get in range of the boss. If you see the tank make a sharp turn and you think that they might bring Razorscale around in a way that will have her facing you, move. It’s the best thing you can do. Razorscale is rather large, so if you wait too long to move, you may not get out of her way and her Flame Breath WILL kill you.

We’ll be continuing this guide for all the bosses of Ulduar, so keep an eye out for later bosses in future articles. If you’ve got special tips that your group uses to defeat these bosses, be sure to leave them in the comments!

Good writeup, except you don’t mention that FD is bugged for this fight, and does not drop aggro. For any hunter new to the fight who takes your advice and “burns it down” they will be in for a nasty surprise the moment they realize they’ve gone too far and can’t dump aggro as expected.

What I do to counter this, is I enter viper just before P2 starts, and pump 2-3 MD’s into one of the tanks, until I’m pretty far down the threat list, then I switch back to dragonhawk for some real DPS, while continuing to pump MD everytime it’s up. I still find myself having to just autoshot, or even stop shooting altogether, but it’s better than not being able to do anything at all during P2

I like britomartis’ idea to go to viper here- our problem is that we build a ton of threat and easily overtake the tanks because blizzards knows we have FD and punishes us if we fail to use it (which I can agree with). The problem is when FD fails (and this is totally a blame-blizzard issue, they’re the only ones to fix this), and we easily take the tanks.

We build a lot of threat in the first 50% of Razorscale so when he comes down I generally just stop for a few seconds while the tank taunts off me then makes a dent further in the threat so I don’t pull right back.

OH, and another thing- in 25-man, for anyone that can’t tell, that gun is for TANKS, not for us hunters.

I wasn’t aware of the Feign Death bug, so that’s a good catch guys :D . I tend to just MD all the time throughout the fight, especially when my screen flashes red (from Omen as a warning), and that usually takes care of everything for me.

Also, I keep my pet at my side during the phases dealing with the adds when Razorscale is in the air (but send my pet to attack Razorscale when she’s down).

With the chain lightning, whirlwind attacks, and flame patches on the ground, it’s just too easy to have our pet die out there. And you need the dps that your pet will give you for attacking Razorscale much more than you need that extra dps for taking down the adds.

Yeah, the FD bug is the biggest thing to know before walking into this encounter. Let the tanks know about the bug too since they’ll think you’re just an idiot for playing tag with their threat bar.
