Instance Guide: Utgarde Pinnacle

Utgarde Pinnacle

Utgarde Pinnacle is the second of the two dungeons  located in the center of the Howling Fjord.  It’s the home of Svala Sorrowgrave, Gortok Palehoof, Skadi the Ruthless and King Ymiron. There is nothing particularly difficult about this instance except perhaps Skadi that may present a challenge to new players.

Boss Strategies

Svala Sorrowgrove

Svala Sorrowgrave

She has three abilities she will use against you and your party, Call of Flames, Ritual of the Sword and Sinsiter Strike.  Svala Sorrowgrave is mostly a typical tank and spank encounter. Have the main tank engage her where she is standing and the rest of the party can spread out around her. The torches in the wall will occasionally throw fireballs at the party causing fire damage. Periodically Svala will cast Ritual of the Sword where she will fly into the air and slowly drop her sword. Three adds will spawn as well that are all casting a spell to hold one of the players in place, these adds have minimal health. Kill the three adds, move away from the sword, wait for it to drop and the boss will come back down again. Rinse and Repeat. As a Hunter your biggest issue will be LOS(Line of Sight) to the Boss and her adds. Stay to the side of the steps avoiding fire damage as much as possible and when she sacrafices someone burn the adds down. Make sure to call your pet off Svala as the pet will stay on the altar and be hit by Ritual of the sword.

Gortok Palehoof

Gortok Palehoof

He is initially stationary and untargetable. He is surrounded by four other enemies frozen in stasis. To begin the event, use the nearby podium. A red sphere will appear and target one of the four enemies freeing it from stasis. After one is defeated, another enemy will be activated. On normal, only two must be killed before Gortok becomes active. On heroic, all four must be defeated. The chain boss fights make it a battle of healing efficiency. The fight against Gortok is a race against time. Rather frequently, Gortok will use Withering Roar.  This will eventually make it impossible to win and players will not have enough health to survive. In addition to the roar, Gortok will Impale a random player.  Lastly, Gortok uses Arcing Smash. The tank should face Gortok away from party members to minimize the damage done. This is a difficult fight to heal through with all the party wide damage being done. The goal is to hopefully start the fight with enough mana left to outlast Gortok. Remeber Range is your Friend!

Skadi the Ruthless

Skadi the Ruthless

Skadi is found immediatley following Gortok. He stands next to his blue proto-drake Grauf. When players get too close,Skadi jumps on Grauf and flies off. A horde of Ymirjar will come charging down the hallway. As the party fights their way down the hallway, two things will occur. Pairs of Ymirjar will spawn at the end of the hall and head to engage the party. While the party continues down the hall, Skadi riding on Grauf will strafe the hall with a freezing breath. This will cover either the left or right side of the hall in frost. Standing in this region will cause players to take considerable damage. The party needs to watch for Grauf and make sure to avoid standing on the side of the hall being targeted. When players get to the end of the hall, they’ll find a bunch of harpoon launchers. As Grauf circles, there will be a brief period of time in which players can use the harpoons they’ve gathered with the launchers to attack Grauf. It takes five harpoons or so in order to kill Grauf. When Grauf is killed, Skadi will leap off and attack the party. Simply avoid his three abilities, Crush, Poisoned Spear and Whirlwind .  Stay at range and Keep YOU and your PET out of his whirlwind!

King Ymiron

King Ymiron

King Ymiron sits on his throne in a chamber with four boats. During the fight, Ymiron will buff himself with Bane. The party can either stop attacking or heal through the damage. Bane is also purgeable and spell stealable so a shaman or mage make this a much easier encounter. Every 20% health, Ymiron will cast Screams of the Dead. The King takes this opportunity to run to a nearby ship. Each ship results in a different mechanic that the party will have to overcome. Simple enough, Stay ranged and it’s a Tank and Spank!

Drops you want in Boss kill order:

Yes I did include leather as some may prefer, or use the same philosophy as me “Take what drops, and not what you may be able to obtain.”

If I remember correctly, bane can be removed with tranquilizing shot.

On Skadi the Ruthless my tank and I use a little aggro swap to avoid the Whirlwind. We stand at opposite corners and as soon as I see Whirlwind I use Distracting Shot. The tank just Taunts him back after he has crossed most of the area.

Tinain, Your are 100% correct, Bane is traqable, Please forgive as i am the hunter that removed tranq from his bar after the MC days : ) Maybe i will toss in a article of why Tranq Shot scares me : ) And to Windchaser, i wish the tanks i had were that smart, they tend to chase my Pet as i drop a trap and call the pet back. Speaking of which a snake trap does wonders for his damage while he is whirlwinding try it: ) sigh so many misses already. REVISE PLEASE : ) thank you guys and keep the comments coming and i will respond as i encourage positive feedback, new techniques and ideas we can all share to avoid be calling that Hunt-ard Name : )
See ya in the next round i hope : )~
