Hunter Island: Round 1 Voting

With the deadline for round 1 submissions behind us, it’s time to begin the voting process! I’ll give a brief run-down of the submissions we’ve had so far so you can get a feel for things before we get right into voting. One thing I would like ask, first, is that you keep your critiques respectful. Remember, these folks worked hard on these posts. Treat them as you would want to be treated. I don’t think this will be an issue, but it bears mentioning. I’ll be keeping an eye on the comments, just in case. ;) That having been said, let’s get the ball rolling!

Our Contestants

1. Michael

First, we saw Michael’s submission, wherein he described why he decided to roll a Hunter in the first place. His journey began with Warcraft III, playing the Night Elf race and a desire to have a companion within the game, even while soloing. Michael goes on to describe the changes he’s seen in the class from when he started playing around Patch 1.6 and describes how subsequent patches have affected his play style and feelings toward the Hunter class.

2. Oripoon

Our second submission was from Oripoon who chose to share with us what he thinks a player can expect from the game when rolling a Hunter for the first time, especially for those who choose to go Beast Mastery. He likens playing a Hunter to always having a partner to rely on within the game, which is something that veteran Hunters can surely relate to. Oripoon also goes on to discuss some problems players may face while playing a Hunter for the first time, such as the long-established reputation for poor performance and loot distribution.

3. Mintaka

In our third entry, Mintaka describes the experience of rolling a Hunter for the first time, but with the unexpected twist of not completely enjoying it the first time around. After rolling another Hunter, Mintaka describes the ease of leveling and progressing into end-game content almost seamlessly in the quest to improve.

4. Dervisch

As our fourth submission, Dervisch brings much needed advice for those looking to play a Hunter, particularly in end-game content. This submission stresses the importance of skill over gear, fair play, and attention to detail as the keys to being a successful Hunter. With just enough math to whet your apetite for more, Dervisch gives a good overview of the stepping stones to becomming the best Hunter you can be.

5. Robert

Robert brings a certain poetic flair to our fifth submission, describing the basis for and history of the Hunter class, and why wielding bow and beast where the only choice for him. Bringing a unique Survivalist feel to the mix of submissions we’ve had so far, Robert describes sentiments very near my own concerning the history of how the Hunter class has evolved within the World of Warcraft.

6. Railor

In our sixth submission, Railor, too, describes why he chose to roll a Hunter, explaining why he identified strongly with the class from the start. “Solo character with an enormous gun? Yep, that’ll do for me”, he says. Railor explains why the basics of playing a Hunter are easy to grasp and put into practice, but that the finer aspects of the class take time and skill to master.

7. Chris

Chris, in our seventh submission, admits to having heeded the call of our nerd overlord, William Shatner, citing the hit WoW commercial as the impetus that spurred him into purchasing the game. Chris describes the ease with which he chose the Hunter class as his main and takes us for a quick jaunt down memory lane, offering helpful tips and hints along the way.

8. Spe

In our eighth submission, Spe describes his journey through rolling a Hunter and fearlessly admits his relative newbishness to the community at large. Spe brings a refreshing frankness and openness to the story of being a fairly new Hunter in the fast-paced world of end-game play as well as a willingness to learn and improve which we can all appreciate.

9. Mazil

For our ninth submission, Mazil explains what she feels are her best, and worst, moments playing a Hunter. Running dungeons can be fun and exciting, facing challenges with your friends, but sometimes things can go awry. Let’s not forget, we’ve all had moments where we felt our skills with a trap were almost godlike, until another moment rolls around where we end up feeling like total noobs. And who hasn’t had triumphs and tribulations finding just the right pet?

10. Maddi

Our tenth submission is a short and sweet article from Maddi, describing the process of rolling a Hunter, touching on gear choices and the ever-popular “huntard” label.

11. Sabiba

For our final submission of round 1, Sabiba gives us an optimistic look at her best moments as a Hunter (as well as a request for pet name ideas!). Sabiba reminds us that not all our best moments need to take place in-game, and the support of a good friend can mean the difference between pushing forward or giving up. Also, you never know what you can do until you try.

The Rules

Primarily, the voting will be up to all of you. I trust you to go through and read (or skim, if that’s your thing) the submissions we’ve had in round one, and choose two authors to “vote off the island”. Voting will be conducted via the poll below, and authors are also allowed to participate in the voting process. In the event of a tie, I’ll decide the outcome. Once voting has concluded, I’ll close the poll and tally up the results, at which time I will contact the authors with further instructions on how to proceed. I’ll be posting a follow-up with the results, and will include any notes from the authors not chosen to continue with the contest (if they would like to say anything). Voting will close on Tuesday, so be sure to get your votes in early!

Comments

While constructive comments are appreciated, again, please be sure to keep them respectful. Folks put a lot of work into their submissions, and while suggestions for improvement are great, derogatory comments will not be tolerated. I’m sure I don’t have to really tell you folks that, but you know I like to have my bases covered. ;)

Vote away! And if you haven’t already, be sure to subscribe via RSS or email so you don’t miss a thing!

The second person was very hard 2 pick.

    My only advice is
a)Don’t mske your first post a rant
b)If you’re one of the later posters, (i.e 5th post and above, try not to fall into the trap of making the articles the same. Lots of these seemed to me like they were the same idea worded differently. It’s nice at 1st, but like 6+ of them is kinda boring.

Drazmor, one thing you have to consider is that some of the posts might have been submitted before most of the posts went up. I know that in my case, only the first entry had been posted when I submitted mine.

That’s not to say you don’t have a point, because you do. Hopefully the next round will have a more fine-grained topic so we can see how each of the remaining contestants approach it.

One suggestion I’d have for Lass is that she accept all the submissions until the closing date, and then post them in one or two batches, similar to what Matticus did. (Maybe 3 batches of 3?)

I was pretty impressed with the quality of some of the submissions. I look forward to seeing the posts in the next round.

Hmmm, tough calls for choices to vote off.
I hate to actually chose another one, and must do so without implying insult to any entries. Good work, all of you!
    *closes eyes and starts clicking*

(no, not really, I made educated choices, but they were HARD! Easier to choose my favorite, than it is to choose my least favorite, and have to internally think about why I choose that entry. *grin*)
