Macros…. what the hell do I do about these, exactly?

This article contains outdated information.

Okay, so I have to say that macros are something I have essentially ignored for most of the time I’ve spent playing WoW. To be honest, I have only a vague understanding of how they work and how they’re constructed. I’ve made a few simple ones myself (an Out of Mana anouncement for my priest/druid, a summoning macro for my warlock, etc) and tried to copy&paste a couple others from outside sources.

Today, I was browsing the Hunter forums and happened across a discussion of macros. Someone had asked for a macro to toggle PetAttack/PetFollow so that they could send their pet after a target or call it back, without having to switch stances or anything like that. Over all, an extremely useful tool, especially for instances. Damh (from Big Red Kitty) posted a reply supplying the macro:

/castsequence reset=combat/target PetAttack, PetFollow

Sounds great! So, I copied and pasted it into my macros menu, and ran off into the wilds of the Hellfire Peninsula to try it out.

No go. I tried tinkering with it in any way I could think of, to no avail. Not sure why it didn’t work, exactly, since everyone on the forums seemed to get it working fine. I’m sure I’ll figure it out eventually…

Anyway, while I was tinkering with that, I came up with a pretty nifty macro of my own. This one would really only apply to Night Elf hunters with cats trained in Prowl (like myself), but I think it’s great. (Especially for when I’m in the middle of nowhere and need to go AFK, lol.)

/cast Shadowmeld
/cast [pet:cat] Prowl

What does it do? It causes me and my pet to simultaneously stealth (so I don’t have to scamper all over the screen to get to the individual abilities). I’ve found this to be handy on a number of occassions… going AFK in the middle of nowhere (lol), instance runs (great for jumping down near mobs, summoning pet, and then disappearing so as not to accidentally grab aggro if the mobs move around a bit), and so on. Shadowmeld is something I take advantage of whenever possible. It’s a great racial, especially for solo’ing.

Okay, so I know this doesn’t sound all that impressive… but damn it, I’m proud of myself for coming up with it! :P Lol.

Anyway… if any of you know of any great hunter macros (PvE or PvP, doesn’t matter which), feel free to comment and let me know. Also, if you know how to fix that PetAttack macro, I’m all ears, lol.

Well, color me embarrassed. I never tested my macro and, sure enough, it violates some WoW 2.0 rules.

The problem comes from the use of /cast with a pet spell. Hunter spells are direct; they aren’t “casted”.

    /petfollow not /cast petfollow

    /petattack not /cast petattack

So the macro was doomed from the outset. Also, this means that we cannot use /castsequence with pet spells.

Bummer, but we can overcome it with the use of modifiers. Create this macro (and yes, I tested it this time):

    /petfollow [modifier:shift]
    /petattack [modifier:ctrl]

And assign it to a hotkey, let’s say F4.

If you hit F4 by itself, nothing happens. However, if you hit CTRL-F4, you will send you pet to attack. Then, if you hit SHIFT-F4, your pet will return.

Great site, Lassirra, I love the new look.

    Hey Damh! :D

Thanks for the reply. I have to admit, I spent a good 15 mins sitting there scratching my head going “Why the hell doesn’t this silly thing work?”

As I said, I have very limited understanding of macros, so I was lost, lol. I really appreciate the help! :D

I’m definitely writing down the revision for the next time I log on, so I can update the macro I created so that it’ll work this time, lol.

Btw, thanks so much for stopping by! Your praise means quite a bit to me. I adore your site, it’s such an inspiration! Your site’s helped me a lot in developing my skills as a hunter, both for solo’ing and group stuff.

As for the new look here… I can’t take any credit for it at the moment, lol! The theme was designed (for public use) by the WoW Addict. However, I’ve got a theme (currently working on converting it to WordPress compatibility) that looks somewhat similar. So, when it eventually goes live, I hope folks will like it just as much. :P

Anyway, thanks loads for stopping by and telling me how to fix that macro, lol. I appreciated it! :D

With regards to your sm/prowl macro
ive been using something similar for some time but there is one thing that is bugging me,

i cant seem to get the macro to “check the state of my pet” then casts prowl if its not prowling.
i often end up pressing my sm/prowl macro when i have autocast prowl on:)
Which puts me into sm and toggles prowl off and onto timer which = doh especially when im pvping

I’ve had that happen to me as well, lol.

Honestly, I have no idea how to fix it, since my knowledge of macros is extremely limited. Maybe a search of the Hunter Forums would yield some info?
